What did one dairy cow say to the other? -Got milk?

In the United States, there are seven different dairy cow breeds.

*Holstein - Being the most common breed and known for the black-and-white spots. Did you know Holstein cows’ spots are like snowflakes? No two are exactly alike.

*Jersey - The smallest of the dairy breed. They are light to dark brown in color. The most heat-tolerant of dairy breeds

*Brown Swiss - Considered to be the oldest dairy breed. Brown Swiss have a kind nature and docile temperament.

*Guernsey - Range from fawn to golden in color. Because they are known as a unique producer of rich, golden-colored milk, Guernsey's were given the title “Golden Guernsey.”

*Ayrshires - Rusty-red and white in color, they adapt easily to their environment. Known as the “aristocrat” of dairy breeds because of its size and vigor.

*Milking Shorthorn - Considered a dual-purpose breed that can be used for milk or beef production. Large in size. White and roan (red, black or brown mixed with white) in color.

*Red and White Holstein - The most recent breed of cows to be recognized, coming into the breed family in 1964. Characteristics are similar to a black-and-white Holstein. Known for a strong immune system and tolerance to heat.

What comes from cows?

Milk. That milk is then used to make cheese, yogurt, butter, ice cream, sour cream, cottage cheese, whey, and cream cheese.

What do cows eat?

Grain mixed with hay, corn silage, and other feeds.

They consume about 100 pounds of feed and drink about a bathtub full of water (25-50 gallons) of water daily.

Interesting Cow Facts

Cows are social animals, and they naturally form large herds. And like people, they will make friends and bond to some herd members, while avoiding others

Cow Terms

Cow- a mature female bovine that has given birth to at least one or two calves.

Bull- a mature, intact male bovine used for breeding purposes.

Steer- a male bovine (or bull) that has been castrated before reaching sexual maturity and is primarily used for beef.

Heifer- a female bovine less than 1 to 2 years of age that has never calved.

Calf- an immature bovine (male and female) that is reliant on milk from its dam or from a bottle in order to survive and grow. A calf is known as such from birth to around 10 months of age.

Cattle- general plural term for more than one bovine
