Popular Horse Breeds

  *Arabian- One of the oldest and most recognizable horse breeds in the world. Its distinctive dished face, high tail carriage, and large eyes and nostrils make it easy to spot, and its courage and fiery spirit. 

  *Quarter Horse- Known as the fastest breed of horses over short distances and most popular breed in the United States. They have a small, short, refined head with a straight profile, and a strong, well-muscled body, featuring a broad chest and powerful, rounded hindquarters.

  *Thoroughbred- Is best known for its use in horse racing. They typically range from 15.2 to 17.0 hands (62 to 68 inches) high. They are most often bay, dark bay or brown, chestnut, black, or gray.

  *Tennessee Walking Horse- Described as "refined and elegant, yet solidly built".  It is a tall horse with a long neck. The head is well-defined, with small, well-placed ears. They are found in all solid colors and several pinto patterns.

  *Morgan- Compact and refined in build, the Morgan has strong legs, an expressive head with a straight or slightly convex profile and broad forehead; large, prominent eyes; well-defined withers, laid back shoulders, and an upright, well-arched neck. The tail is attached high and carried gracefully and straight.

  * American Paint Horse- is a breed of horse that combines both the conformational characteristics of a western stock horse with a pinto spotting pattern of white and dark coat colors. Each Paint Horse has a particular combination of white and another color of the equine spectrum. Most common are horses with white spots combined with black, bay, brown, and chestnut or sorrel.

  *Appaloosa- is an American horse breed best known for its colorful spotted coat pattern. The weight range varies from 950 to 1,250 pounds, and heights from 14 to 16 hands (56 to 64 inches). 

  *Miniature horses- are horses defined by their small height. They are generally quite hardy, often living longer on average than some full-sized horse breeds; the average life span of miniature horses is from 25 to 35 years.

  *Standardbred- is an American horse breed best known for its ability in harness racing, where members of the breed compete at either a trot or pace. Tend to be more muscled and longer bodied than the Thoroughbred.

  *Haflinger- also known as the Avelignese. Are always chestnut in color. The mane and tail are white or flaxen. 

  *Paso Fino- tends to be refined, standing an average of 13 to 15.2 hands (52 to 62 inches) but is powerful for its size. Often has a thick mane and tail. It is found in all horse colors

Horse Terms

Filly: A female horse under 4 years old.

Mare: A female horse over 4 years old.

Foal: A baby horse or pony still at its mother's side.

Colt: A male horse under 4 years old that has not been castrated.

Stallion: A male horse over 4 years old that has not been castrated.

Withers: The area on the horse’s back just after the neck but above the shoulders


Fetlock: The horse’s ankle


Forelock: The hair between the horse’s ears that falls onto the forehead


Hocks: The elbow-like joint of the horse’s back legs.


Muzzle: The area of the horse’s head includes the mouth and nostrils

Hand: This is the common way to measure horses. One hand is 4 inches, so a horse that is 15 hands is 60 inches tall.
